Vadnais Heights is making significant strides in sustainability through initiatives like the GreenStep Cities program and local environmental projects.
GreenStep Cities Program
In April 2024, Vadnais Heights joined the Minnesota GreenStep Cities program, a voluntary initiative aimed at helping cities achieve sustainability and quality-of-life goals. By Earth Day, April 22, 2024, the city had progressed to Step 2, demonstrating its commitment to environmental stewardship. As part of this program, Vadnais Heights is enhancing energy efficiency in municipal buildings, reducing water waste, planning for resilient city growth, and training staff in Smart Salting techniques to minimize environmental impact during winter months.
Energy Action Plan
In 2025, Vadnais Heights collaborated with Xcel Energy’s Partners in Energy to develop an Energy Action Plan. This plan, approved by the City Council on November 5, 2025, serves as a roadmap for building an energy-resilient community. The plan focuses on increasing energy efficiency, expanding renewable energy adoption, strategically reducing the use of gas and oil by replacing it with electricity, and making energy more affordable. The goal is to increase energy program participation by 30% between 2025 and 2030, resulting in estimated savings of $4.2 million and an 80% increase in energy savings by 2030.
Solar Energy Initiatives
In September 2025, the city completed the installation of a Solar PV System on the roof of City Hall. This system reduces the city’s reliance on grid energy, lowering energy bills and carbon emissions. Between September and October 2025, the system produced 3.77 MWh of electricity, nearly matching the average City Hall electrical use of 3.96 MWh. This project was funded by a Solar on Public Buildings Grant from the Minnesota Department of Commerce.
Pollinator Protection Efforts
Recognizing the importance of pollinators to local ecosystems, Vadnais Heights declared itself a Pollinator-Friendly Community in April 2024. The city has minimized the use of insecticides and installed native plantings in several public parks, including Berwood Park, Bridgewood Park, City Hall, Elmwood Park, Kohler Meadows Park, Westfield Park, and Vadnais Heights Commons. These efforts aim to support pollinator populations and promote biodiversity.
Community Engagement
The Vadnais Heights Green Team, a resident-led group, meets monthly to advise and partner with the city on sustainability initiatives. The team collaborates with city staff, including the Natural Resource Specialist, to implement and promote environmental projects. One notable project is the Little Green Library, located across from the compost drop-off at City Hall. This hub offers a free seed library with native seeds, books about nature and the environment for all ages, and resources related to sustainability and environmentalism.
Through these comprehensive efforts, Vadnais Heights is demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship, fostering a healthier and more resilient community for all residents.
